About Me
My Name is Maya, and I wear a lot of hats.
- I am a transplanted Washingtonian who loves the outdoors. I enjoy taking walks, running, hiking, climbing, exploring the forests, rockhounding, and also being cozy at home.
- I am an amateur artist who expresses myself through writing, music (violin and voice), and other creative means. - I am currently a Graduate Nursing student aspiring towards my doctorate degree. As an individual with chronic illness, and experiences navigating the complex healthcare vehicle, I am passionate about narratives and improving the reach and efficacy of quality healthcare. - I am an active community member desiring to pay it forward as I feel blessed and fortunate to have the opportunities I have been afforded, and to have the precious family and friends who encircle me. - I am a business owner and entrepreneur learning and growing as I go! - I believe in the vision of the USA, this beautiful melting pot of diverse peoples and ideas where the freedoms we are afforded (which come at a great cost) allow us to take meaningful steps towards change. I am passionate about doing my part to contribute to making this country- and the world- a better place. Kindness, honesty, and empathy go a long way- especially in the midst of tumultuous times. |
I possess a colorful and diverse background as an individual, a student, and a professional
Academic Experience
I studied at a Liberal Arts University where I Majored in Applied Human Biology with a Physiology Focus, and Minored in Psychology. With a wide set of interests, I find the learning captivating and enjoy the opportunity to explore a multitude of subject areas beyond my degree focus. While in University, I regularly enrolled in Music and Creative Writing Courses along with my major STEM coursework. I worked full time, participated in Undergraduate research, served as a diversity intern for a sister school, and was recognized as a student ambassador. I also worked very hard as an undergraduate volunteering over a thousand hours towards the founding of an on-campus non profit organization. Development and establishment of the Seattle Pacific University Chapter of The Food Recovery Network (SPU FRN) which is a program dedicated to simultaneously combating mass food waste and providing would-be-wasted food to populations in need within the Greater Seattle Area has been my greatest contribution . The program recovered over 10k pounds of food in it's first year alone; this food was donated and distributed to populations of individuals facing hunger and food insecurity - especially the area's communities facing homelessness. This is perhaps the accomplishment I am most proud of and the journey of its creation brings me immense gratitude. I hope to continue expanding upon this model in the future and on a greater scale.
Professional Experience
I have been an employee since age 15, when I acquired my first job in High School working at the movie theater on my military installation overseas. I continued to work full time through most of my collegiate career as well, then took a short break, and returned to the work force when I left university . My work experience is diverse, including a great deal of time spent in customer service, independent and leadership positions, and with project management . I have also been very present within the behavioral health environment and medical fields as a volunteer, a student observer, and a professional employee in a number of different roles- medical/ clinical, clerical, and administrative. My work experience spans from small dynamics to large scale organizations serving huge populations. I strongly feel that every role is an opportunity to learn and grow, and I try to carry my lessons with me.
Career Aspirations
I discovered during my undergraduate career that I was drawn to the healthcare field. Working closely with fellow humans as I engaged in homelessness outreach and advocacy illustrated to me that my love for learning and also sharing knowledge to empower and educate others made me a good fit for a role as a healthcare provider. I saw the intersection of many social-political-cultural-economical issues and how as an advanced practice provider I could be involved within many of the spheres of influence where I feel passionate- I could do some good for others through my work.
Truly I am passionate about people and their narratives. People are resilient and powerful, and this inspires me every day. I enjoy human interaction and the opportunity to engage and share life with those around me. As an aspiring future healthcare provider I look forward to the opportunity to continue engaging with individuals while helping them to overcome barriers and obstacles to better health. I aim to do this through partnership, active listening, and directed steps forward informed by: my own experience as a patient, the experiences of the community, and evidence based practice. I am anticipating the challenges and rewards of learning, educating, empowering- working to uplift and heal.
Interests and hobbies
Beyond the realms of work and study as a healthcare provider, a lot of things bring me joy, and it seems I never have enough time for them all. Some of my favorite pastimes include adventuring in the great outdoors, reading, writing, music and music composition, cooking, creating things (like my Jewelry), and quality time with my friends and family.
Thank you so much for taking a moment to get to know me a little better as a person. If you would like to know more about me or the most recent chapter of my life, which has been incredibly formative, leading to the creation of my business and the start of my entrepreneurial journey- then please read More About Me: My Recent Journey.
